🗺️ GIS Jobs - 17th September 2024

Good afternoon,

Before we jump in to the GIS jobs and other news, I’ve got one information to share with you. I’ll be moving my newsletter to Substack (different provider). I’ll do that either next week, or the week after.

What does it mean for you?

Basically nothing. I may send you a test e-mail this or next week to see if you have received it. I’ll also send one last e-mail from here with a link to Substack subscription in case you need to subscribe manually.

Will it remain free?

Yes, it will remain free as it is now.

And now back to the regular content. There are a few UK based job openings this week.

Happy reading!

2 QGIS features you should try

In the last days, I came across two QGIS things you should try:

  1. Steve Kim shared his QGIS style - basic isometric buildings.

And this is where you can download it.

  1. A tutorial on How to make Interactive reveal maps.

2024 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition

Esri has announced the 2024 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition and these are the 5 categories to choose from:

1️⃣ Digital humanities and popular culture
2️⃣ Health and safety
3️⃣ Humanitarian and disaster response
4️⃣ Nature and physical science
5️⃣ Planning and infrastructure

9 tips for the #30DayMapChallenge

As I mentioned, competitions, contests and challenges are a great way to improve your mapping skills and update your portfolio.

Based on my experience from the last year, I’ve written down 9 tips for the #30DayMapChallenge that will take place in November.

Here they are:

1️⃣ Aim for the number of maps you think you would be able to do...be it 10, 5 or just 1 or 2.

2️⃣ Don't compare yourself with others. You are living your own life, not theirs. Maybe you are taking care of a small child or your parent..maybe you have 2 jobs to cover all your expenses..maybe you don't have a computer at home and have to stay longer at work. Or maybe you just want to have your social life also in November, and not spend all your free time behind the computer. Whatever the reason is, plan wisely and based on your conditions.

3️⃣ Choose topics you like the most.

4️⃣ Choose topics you have data for (or you know where to find them).

5️⃣ Have a look at the hashtag hashtag#30DayMapChallenge here on LinkedIn and on Twitter/X, too, and get inspired.

6️⃣ Create the folder structure for the challenge, e.g. one folder for each map and another one for common datasets like a shapefile of the whole world.

7️⃣ Download data - you can find lots of data sources in other people's posts from previous years.

8️⃣ Write down the data source, software you used and short notes of your steps for each map - you may want to come back to it later and you WON'T remember what and how you were doing it.

9️⃣ What else would you add?

I’ve created also a downloadable PDF for you. You can download it here.
